Flint's own Claressa Shields isn't out of the Olympics just yet. After losing a preliminary bout Sunday at the women’s world championships in China the 17-year-old Shields was left to watch along with a handful of others in her middleweight division.
Good news though, Shields is counting on an additional wild-card berth that will be awarded awarded by the International Olympic Committee’s Tripartite Commission after the world championships.
Flint own boxing star Claressa Shields is that much closer to her Olympic dreams. The 17-year-old won the American Boxing Confederation's Women's Elite Continental Championships in Canada last weekend.
One thing you should never do is count Claressa Shields out. Shields kept up her surprising charge through the middleweight bracket with a 31-12 victory over Andrecia Wasson.
The impressive 16-year-old built on her upset of Franchon Crews, the top American 165-pounder, a day earlier. Shields, a 16 year old Flint native, now advances to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Finals on Saturday, February 18.
