If you've lived in Michigan for even one winter you should know the basics of dealing with a winter storm warning. Sadly there's people that have lived here in the mitten state all their life and still don't know the 5 simple things not to do during a winter storm. I'm here to help you not be one of those people.

Every time this year Michigan gets one last giant snow storm. Sure, 60% of the time every time that storm actually isn't as strong as predicted, but lets just say for the sake of this article that tomorrow is going to be very snowy. The National Weather Service is predicting up to 12 inches in less than 24 hours for most of Genesee County and the surrounding areas, so maybe we should take it seriously. Here's 5 simple things NOT to do during the storm tomorrow...

1. Don't Go Out Into The Storm If You Don't Need To.

I know you want to meet with your friends for a couple drinks or maybe just get out of the house, but you can do that this weekend or any other time other than one of the biggest snow storms this winter. Seriously, is a couple drinks or some driving worth crashing into a ditch? No, it isn't.

2. Don't Ever Touch A Downed Power Line.

I know this is probably self explanatory, but some people really need to follow this rule. Just because a power line is down doesn't mean its dead. With the possibility of this weeks storm having 40+ MPH wind gusts, power lines may fall to the ground. Do. Not. Touch. Them. Leave that to the professionals.

3. Don't Show Off In Your 4x4 Or AWD Car.

We get it, you put huge tires on your Ford F-250 for times like a winter storm warning. That's really awesome, but I don't need to get run off the road for you to prove how cool you are. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you, and for the love of all that is holy please don't ride my tail thinking I'm going to go faster. If anything I'll go slower just to prove that you are an idiot that has a lead foot.

4. Don't Wait Till The Last Second To Prepare For The Storm.

What are you doing right now? Nothing? Just reading his article? Go out and get items for the storm! Don't wait till the last second to get stuff because chances are hundreds of people smarter than you already picked it up! If you're reading this and thinking "Hey idiot I don't need anything I'm all set!" then obviously you have batteries for your flashlights and other electronics, first aid kit, blankets, water for at least a couple days, food that won't spoil, and about a dozen other items that you should get to stock up for the possibility of no electric or water.

5. Don't Call The Electric Company And Scream About Not Having Power.

I get it, you're frustrated that there is no power. So are the thousands of other people who are without power. The electric company knows you need help, and they are doing their best to get to you. Here's a suggestion for next time, prepare for the storm a little better and you won't be so cold.
