With monthly subscriptions all the rage these days online, and now even in some movie theaters thanks to the obscenely inexpensive one-movie-a-day-every-day-for-$10-a-month-seriously-how-can-this-company-make-money plan offered by MoviePass, it was only a matter of time before one of the big theater chains tried making their own subscription service. And here it is: Cinemark’s Movie Club. For $9 a month, you get:


In a press release, Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi said Movie Club was “consumer research-driven” and designed “with all of the features and benefits that moviegoers desire most in a membership program without any of the hassle.” In this case, that does not include unlimited movies (or one a day every day) like MoviePass; $9 gets you just one ticket per month, although if you don’t use the ticket, it does roll over to the following month. Still, at least in New York, a $9 ticket is almost 50% off the regular price, which almost justifies signing up for a dork like me who goes to the movies constantly. (Of course, there are no Cinemarks in New York City, so this really doesn’t help me at all unless I feel like driving out of state to want to watch The Snowman.)

I do think the price could be lower (or higher with more frequent trips to the movies included) but we’ll see how customers respond, and whether other chains follow suit with different and more appealing offers.
