The first Claressa Shields Community Project Summer Boot Camp participants are about to graduate, and she is honoring them this weekend.

Shields announced the camp for kids in May, and for the last month has been working with the kids every day. The camp uses the lessons that Shields has learned through boxing to help them cope with the every day struggles they face.

Shields teamed up with Joy Tabernacle Church in Flint and the Urban Renaissance Center located inside the church. They all helped put the camp together, and will actually start another session on July 1st.

The graduation celebration will happen on June 30th at Joy Tabernacle along with a presentation from Shields. The Youth Motivational Experience is open to the public and will feature Shields speaking about what they have accomplished so far.

I want you to keep in mind that Shields is doing all this with a couple of major things going on.

When she started the camp, she announced that she would also be fighting in August. Training for a fight is a full time job, but Shields made sure to make time for kids in Flint. Now the fight has been postponed because of a knee injury Shields suffered recently.

So instead of checking out of her projects so her knee can heal, she grabbed some crutches and showed the students how to persevere.

This woman deserves all of our respect, accolades, and gratitude. She is a leader and an outstanding role model for our kids. Thank you Claressa.
