There is no doubt that fewer people are using landline phones these days, but a new bill in Michigan would make it so nobody had landline service by 2017, and that has a few people tugging at law makers cords.

The majority of landline users would be pushed over to some sort of internet based phone service, but opponents are saying that it would threaten public safety.

The main argument is  that in a situation where the internet is down, or the power is out, that people would not be able to dial 911 in an emergency.

Supporters of the bill say that there is plenty of time before the deadline to work out any situation, and ensure 911 service in any emergency.

Do you think the landline phone needs to be a thing of the past, or is the need for a reliable back up system still there?
