Still no word on a second stimulus bill, but Governor Whitmer did take advantage of the Presidents Executive order. The first stimulus bill added $600 a week to those on state unemployment, on top of what the state would have paid. But that ended July 31st, which gave those surviving on Unemployment benefits a $600 a week pay cut. With many still unemployed and moratoriums on rent and mortgages ending, this is not a time when people can afford to lose what income they have.

President Trump did an executive order after congress did not approve another stimulus package, offering to cover $300 a week in addition to their unemployment checks. It is not the $600 people were getting, but it is a lot better than nothing at all. ClickonDetroit reports “This is good news for the thousands of Michiganders who are still without work because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s still a short-term band aid that falls short of what’s needed,” said Governor Whitmer. “We need the president, Mitch McConnell, and Congress to put partisanship aside and pass a bipartisan recovery package that will help us save lives and get people back on their feet. Michigan families, frontline workers, and small business owners are counting on the federal government to do the right thing and work together on their behalf.”

Michigan applied for it last Monday, the Government approved the request last Friday. EMA will work with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to implement a system to make this funding available to Michigan residents. The good news, claimants do not have to do anything more to get it, all claimants who are eligible for at least $100 a week in unemployment will automatically have this added to their check. This includes those receiving regular unemployment insurance benefits as well as Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. And they will be paid retroactively to August 1st. It is unknown how long this benefit will last.
