If you were planning on hopping on the Detroit People Mover anytime soon…yeah, that’s not happening.

The entire system is shut down right now, and at this point, nobody really knows when it’s coming back.

It’s been running in downtown Detroit since the late 80s, and while it’s only a 2.9-mile loop, it’s still a go-to for getting around without dealing with parking.

Why Is the Detroit People Mover Closed?

According to MLive, it all started with those crazy high winds we had roll through recently. Debris ended up getting tossed onto the tracks, which forced an inspection.

During inspections, crews found that a large piece of metal somehow got underneath one of the trains and ripped through a section of track cable. Not exactly a quick fix.

According to a post on Facebook, crews are working around the clock to fix the damage.

When Will the People Mover Reopen?

That’s the frustrating part for Detroiters and visitors…there’s no timeline.

Officials say safety is the top priority, which obviously makes sense. But before anything reopens, they’ve got to repair the damage and then run full system testing to make sure everything is good to go.

And with something like this, obviously, they don't want to rush it.

For now, if you’re heading downtown, you’re going to need a backup plan.
