Parents Push Back Over Lakeview High’s Request for Students’ Menstrual Cycle Information

A policy regarding menstrual cycles at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores is getting a lot of attention.

According to WXYZ, female students who miss swimming because of their menstrual cycle can make up the missed days. A parent must provide a written note or email stating the length of the student’s cycle before the missed days can be made up.

Yes, you read that right. The school is asking girls to disclose when and how long they are on their period. Apparently, it is under a section in the gym course outline called Non-Swim Days for Pool Only.

As you will see in the video below, this is not sitting well with parents.

Lakeview School District Superintendent Karl Paulson released the following statement,

We recently became aware of a parent’s concern relative to certain class expectations. Given our commitment to partnering with parents to address any issue that might arise, we immediately sought to schedule a meeting with the parent to engage in a conversation about the concern. We look forward to meeting with the parent in the coming days and working collaboratively with that objective. The Lakeview School District remains fully committed to educational excellence and best practices in all it does.

I am not a parent, but I am a female and I have to say I am surprised by this. The school is asking for super personal information.

On another note, if a student does not want to swim or cannot swim - male or female, I don't see why they have to. Plenty of schools do not have pools, so requiring a student to swim just because the school has a pool does not make sense to me.
