It’s Official: Michigan Is Banning Smartphones in Class
Cellphones in Michigan classrooms have been a debate for years. Well, the debate is finally over. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a new law this week banning smartphones during class time.
The goal here is pretty simple and long overdue, in my opinion. Fewer distractions. More learning. Plain and simple.
Are Any Phones Still Allowed in Michigan Schools?
Of course, there are exceptions. This doesn’t mean kids are totally cut off. Flip phones are still allowed, which honestly feels like it was added knowing most kids don’t even own one.
Medical devices and school-issued tech are fine too. This is really about smartphones and all the stuff that comes with them.
Whitmer didn’t sugarcoat it either. According to MLive, she pointed out that nearly half of kids spend five or more hours a day on their phones. That’s insane when you really think about it. Her message was clear. School should be where attention is actually on learning, not notifications.
How Will Michigan Schools Enforce the Smartphone Ban?
Some already lock their phones in pouches during class. Others require them to stay in lockers or backpacks. The state is setting the minimum, and districts can still go stricter if they want. Honestly, if schools want this to actually work, they probably need to be really strict right out of the gate.
Here’s the best part about all of this. Schools that already banned phones are seeing some awesome changes. Fewer distractions. Better participation. Less fighting. And kids are actually talking to each other like humans again. Imagine that.
Will students love it? Of course not. Most will absolutely hate it. But a lot of teachers say once phones are gone, attention spans improve and classrooms feel normal again.
I know it’s hard for parents to cut that cord, but there’s no real reason to contact your kid during the school day unless it’s an emergency. And in that case, call the school.
