This State Park Just Beat Out Every Other One in Michigan
Trying to pick Michigan’s best state park is almost unfair. We’ve got killer beaches, dunes, waterfalls, thick forests, quiet inland lakes, and big water that makes it hard to believe this is where we live. Ask ten people, and you’ll get ten different answers, and none of them are wrong.
Every winter, the Michigan DNR runs its State Park Madness bracket and lets people vote on their favorite parks. No experts, no panels, just people picking the places they keep going back to.
According to MLive, when all the votes were counted this year, South Higgins Lake State Park came out on top, earning the title of Michigan’s favorite state park for 2026.
Why South Higgins Lake State Park Won
I’ve only been to Higgins Lake once, and even I get it. This place is built for water people. Boats everywhere, tubing all day, cruising around, anchoring up, and losing track of time. The boating access is huge, the shoreline is perfect, and the water is so clear you forget you’re in Michigan.
Marl Lake Gives You a Quieter Option
And it’s not all loud boats and busy weekends either. Marl Lake is right across the road and feels like a totally different place. Smaller, quieter, and surrounded by trails. Great if you’re looking to fish, hike, or just chill without the chaos.
One of Michigan’s Most Popular Campgrounds
And we haven’t even talked about the campground yet. Nearly 400 shaded sites, and it’s one of the most booked campgrounds in Michigan every single year. This is not a last-minute decision park. If you don’t reserve early, good luck. It’s a hot spot for a reason.
Last year’s winner was Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the Upper Peninsula.
