Traverse City Folks Crowd-Funding to Take Back Rightful Cherry Pie Record
The Cherry Capital of the World needs to reclaim this record.
Traverse City, Michigan is known for many things throughout the world. It is one of the most beautiful places in the country and is home to the National Cherry Festival and the world's largest cherry pie tin. Unfortunately, the city is missing one thing.
When you have the world's largest cherry pie tin and host the National Cherry Festival, it would seem only right to have the Guinness World Record of "Largest Cherry Pie," but that is currently not the case.

To give a little background on this, Charlevoix initially set the world record for the largest cherry pit in 1976. That pie weighed in at 17,420 pounds and was 14 feet 4 inches across. Fast forward to 1987, Traverse City broke that record with a cherry pie that weighed 28,350 pounds and was 17 feet 6 inches across. However, that record only lasted for three years until 1990.
The new and current record for World's Largest Cherry Pie belongs to Oliver, British Columbia, Canada. A rotary club in that city decided to destroy the Traverse City record with a pie that was 10,000 pounds heavier. Since July 14th, 1990, the Oliver Rotary Club still holds the record with a cheery pie weighing in at 37,721 pounds.
Today, many people in Traverse City have set their sights on taking back the record and bringing it back to Cherryland USA. With the goal of baking a 50,000-pound, 25-foot cherry pie, this group has started a campaign on gofundme.com. If enough funds are raised, The Big Pie Project will take place in Traverse City Open Space.
