What is Michigan’s Tallest Waterfall and How Tall is It?

One thing Michigan is known for is its many beautiful waterfalls that are mainly found in the Upper Peninsula. As a matter of fact, there are over 300 waterfalls throughout the state of Michigan.

When trying to figure out what waterfall is the tallest in the state, you tend to get a few answers.

Some people say Tahquamenon Falls is the tallest waterfall in Michigan. While it is the most popular waterfall in the state, it's not the tallest. It is however the largest waterfall at 50 feet tall and 200 feet wide. Tahquamenon Falls is the second-largest waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

I always thought that Sable Falls near Grand Marais at the easternmost portion of Pictured Rocks was the tallest waterfall, but it's not. The waterfall is 75' tall and approximately one-half mile from Lake Superior. I went there with the family a couple of years ago (see below) and it was gorgeous.

The tallest waterfall in Michigan is Douglas Houghton Falls in the state's Upper Peninsula. It's located between the villages of Laurium and Lake Linden just off Highway M-26.

According to Wikipedia, at 110 feet from the top to its base, it is Michigan's tallest waterfall.

It may be the tallest but still doesn't come close to the pure Michigan awesomeness of Tahquamenon and Sable Falls.
