Consumers Energy Provides Free Food for Michigan Customers Without Power

While Consumers Energy crews work to restore power to thousands of Michigan customers, the utility company is also giving away free food.

Severe storms and deadly tornadoes swept through Michigan Thursday night (8/24), leaving roughly 700,000 people without power. Since then, that number has been whittled down to approximately 50,000, with more DTE Energy and Consumers Energy customers coming back online each day.

Managing Without Power

Being without electricity for any period of time is difficult, even for those who have portable generators to keep pumps running and refrigerators humming. And when a few hours without power turns into days, those without generators are forced to throw away much of the food in their refrigerators and freezers and are left scrambling at mealtime.

Free Food

Many Consumers Energy customers in the Grand Rapids area were able to take advantage of free food brought in by the utility company over the weekend. Consumers Energy provided free eats, courtesy of a food truck to residents of Comstock Park, just north of Grand Rapids. Power customers in Lansing and Grand Rapids were hit particularly hard by this latest round of storms.

In the video below provided by Fox-17, many people praised Consumers Energy for doing something to help while they are without power.

Cameron Proctor and his family visited the truck, parked near the Alpine Township Hall in Comstock Park.

"We were out of power, and food, for the last day and a half, so this is, this is amazing to bring the community together."

Consumers Energy has brought in crews from outside Michigan to assist its workers in their restoration efforts.
