Police in Flint Township are looking for an individual who is responsible for stealing catalytic converters in broad daylight.

Surveillance System Catches Pictures of Crook's Vehicle

The pictures below were provided to Townsquare Media by King of Glory Lutheran Church, located at the intersection of Beecher and River Roads. The church's video surveillance system captured clear images of the vehicle that police believe belongs to the culprit.

The vehicle in the foreground is an older model, green Chevrolet Venture minivan. The vehicle appears to have a short wheelbase (which was less common for that make and model vehicle) and a luggage rack.

In the background is a white SUV. That vehicle's catalytic converter was stolen during the time the van was present in the church's parking lot. The theft occurred at 12:31 pm last Wednesday (8/16), according to the church's surveillance system's timestamp. The thief was in and out of the facility's parking lot in roughly seven minutes.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Flint Township police at 810.600.3250.

Why Are Catalytic Converters Such a Hot Item?

Approximately 153,000 catalytic converters were stolen in the United States in 2022. Catalytic converters are composed of three precious metals - platinum, palladium, and rhodium - which make them appealing to thieves.

According to Carfax, these are the Top 10 vehicles targeted by catalytic converter thieves in the Midwest.

  1. Ford F Series Truck
  2. Chevrolet Equinox
  3. Honda CR-V
  4. Toyota Prius
