Michigan retailers are slowly walking back their reliance on self-checkout kiosks as they're not only a source of frustration for customers but an often-used vehicle for theft. Some sources report that retailers relying heavily on self-checkout lanes report having nearly twice as much retail fraud as stores with fewer.

But most of that theft is attributed to customers who neglect to scan items during the checkout process, ultimately cutting into the stores' bottom line.

According to CBS Detroit, the discrepancy was discovered during a routine audit in October 2023, indicating that the funds were stolen between July 2022 and November 2023.

The Michigan AG's office alleges that Beaver often scheduled himself as the only manager responsible for depositing the daily cash, including on his days off.

While the audit revealed a discrepancy of about $900,000 between cash sales and deposits, only about $750,000 could be traced back to Beaver. When confronted, beaver admitted to embezzling the money from the store.

If he's convicted, Mr. Beaver could face 20 years in prison.
