Michigan-Made Dessert And National Phenomenon Celebrates 150 Years

This month marks a huge milestone that has been delighting Michiganders for 150 years. It doesn't matter where you live in the United States of America. Chances are that at one point this Michigan-made delight was right in front of you.

Originally opened in the area of Woodward and Gratiot in Detroit, the first of these locations would open and change everything for lovers of ice cream and cake.

The first location for a business called Sanders opened in May of 1875. Just stop and think about that for a second. This was before cars, TV, radio, the internet... it's crazy to think that a business that started that long ago could possibly still be around today.

But their flavors, recipes and overall charm has captivated Americans for a century and a half, and their legacy continues.

On May 15th, the company and community took some time to celebrate the Sanders success.  Many people from Metro Detroit have fond memories growing up on ice cream sodas, cream puff hot fudge sundaes from Sanders. And who can possibly forget their legendary Bumpy Cake?
