If you happen to have an extra $575,000 at your disposal, a unique opportunity awaits. You could own a piece of historic real estate nestled within Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Located in Chippewa County, Frying Pan Island is a 3-acre island that sits just offshore from DeTour Village and two miles upstream from the mouth of the St. Marys River.

According to Lighthouse Friends, Captain William Thorn, who reportedly was the first person to take a ship up St. Marys River and into Lake Superior, was windbound one day near the mouth of the river and decided to go ashore on a nearby island. He found a frying pan that had been left by Indians, so, he named it Frying Pan Island.

There was an actual lighthouse that sat on the island from the late 1800s to 1988. The Coast Guard moved in 1988 from the island and took it back to their base in Sault Ste. Marie. It was restored and put on display outside their headquarters.

We did have this under contract, unfortunately, the coast guard had an easement over the middle of the island they forgot about. It took close to a year but this has been resolved. There is a lot to say about it, but the biggest is you would have no problem social distancing here. Sellers are negotiable and motivated and have good title and ready to move this island!

I think it would be so cool to own a piece of history like this. And while $575,000 seems like a lot of money, it's really not considering you'd own your own island in the Upper Peninsula.

The island pretty much sits vacant now but from time to time it's used to launch fireworks for the village of DeTour.
