Master P is encouraging a national day of peace after the tragic shooting death of 7-year-old Dequante Hobbs Jr. on May 22 in Louisville, Ky. Recently, the No Limit Records founder announced plans to host a peace rally at his forthcoming Team Hope Nola Celebrity Basketball Game at the Xavier University Convocation Center during the 2017 Essence Festival on June 29. The New Orleans-based rapper made inviting Hobbs' mother a priority as soon as he heard about the shooting.

“When I heard of this horrific tragedy I had to reach out to his family. As a father, I can only imagine what she must be going through,” P says. “I wanted to do something special for her, inviting her to New Orleans as my guest during [the 2017 Essence Festival] is just a small gesture to try and put a smile on her face. We are calling for peace. We need to send a strong message to our community; this senseless violence must stop. Having his mom at the game helps us with the message.”

Hobbs was struck by a stray bullet as he sat in the dining room table of his Louisville home just over a week ago. He was quickly rushed to a local hospital, but he died shortly after arriving.

Master P, born Percy Miller, wants to call attention to the epidemic of violence in places like his native New Orleans, New Orleans, Chicago, Oakland, Louisville, Detroit and more. Romeo Miller, who is the son of Master P, plans on wearing the number seven as a way of paying tribute to the boy who lost his life in the most tragic of circumstances.

“It is a complete honor for Romeo to wear seven. Everyone knows my son was seven and that was his favorite number, so I am happy they are doing it,” said Hobbs' mother Micheshia Norment.

The peace rally will take place before the celebrity basketball game, which is an event intended to benefit a scholarship fund for the youth of New Orleans, the place where Master P was raised.
