Megan Thee Stallion Has a Message for Men Hating on Her Love for Anime

In hip-hop, 2019 has really been the year where the ladies shine. One of the hottest names out of the South is Megan Thee Stallion, the 24-year-old Houston native who's explicit raps and room-filling charisma have catapulted her into the public eye. With her mixtape, Fever, on the way and her single, "Big Ol Freak," still making waves—the song currently sits at No. 99 on the Billboard Hot 100—the 300 Entertainment signee sat down with XXL for the latest episode of Who Am I? to discuss her childhood, her introduction to rapping, anime and much more.

Before Megan became Thee Stallion, she had other dreams. "When I was little, I wanted to be a plastic surgeon," she shares excitedly. "I used to watch Dr. 90210 and I would see the ladies would get up after they got their boobs done, or their nose job and they'll be all happy and shit." An aversion to the sight of blood forced a younger Megan to switch lanes. "What can I do to make ladies feel like bad bitches? I'll just make bad bitch music!"

In addition to an early interest in music, Megan Thee Stallion always had something to do, thanks to a mother who made sure she was busy. "My mom was the type of person who didn't believe in being bored; she'd be like, 'Go write a fuckin' book or something!' she explains. "I spent a lot of time drawing and writing little comic books, and my mom was a rapper, so I would steal her instrumentals." Artistically inclined from early on, taking her mom's beats led to her spitting on her own—Megan's mom rapped under the moniker Holly Wood.

In addition to her mother, who passed away in March, Megan was inspired by rappers from different regions. "Pimp C is my favorite rapper," she says first, highlighting the late rapper from the Lone Star State. But she was also into a well-known rapper from Brooklyn: "I listen to a lot of Biggie, he's so lyrical. You can literally envision everything that he's saying; when I make my music, I try to make it like OK, 'Would Biggie say some cool shit like this?' or 'Is this Pimp C approved?'"
