It was just last year that Lake Superior State University established the nation's first chemistry program focused on soley on cannabis when it launched The Cannabis Center of Excellence. Now the northern Michigan university is "first" again offering a scholarship for its cannabis chemistry program.

A Michigan based business has established a $1200 annual scholarship for students pursuing a degree in cannabis chemistry. The company, Steadfast Labs based in Hazel Park, was excited about providing the first of it's kind scholarship commenting to CBS News,

"It is our great pleasure to grant this unprecedented scholarship for a cutting-edge program in an innovative industry," said Avram Zallen, founder and CEO of Steadfast Labs. "This grant is another opportunity for Steadfast to help LSSU students pursue careers in this exciting and important industry. "

Currently Lake Superior State University offers university offers two different cannabis-related degrees with their cannabis chemistry degree being the first degree program in the U.S. focusing on cannabis-related compounds. Students can obtain either an associate's or bachelor's degree in the field of study.

The university said the collaboration with Steadfast Labs is as groundbreaking as the the degree of study itself saying,

"This donation not only continues our trendsetting ways in this vital new field but also makes our already affordable tuition even more reasonable,"said Dr. Steven Johnson, Dean of the College of Science and the Environment at LSSU. "By funding this scholarship, Steadfast Labs again demonstrates their commitment to supporting future chemists who will enter the workforce and provide public safety in the cannabis field."

Those students looking to apply for the specialized scholarship will need to be sophomores or older and carrying a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The school also offers a cannabis business degree for people who want to be managers, supervisors or have other related business jobs within the cannabis business industry. You can learn more about the degree program here.
