Miley Cyrus Just Made a Cardi B Reference: Here’s Why Some People on Twitter Aren’t Having It
Miley Cyrus is under fire for giving Cardi B a shout-out on Twitter.
On Wednesday (Mar. 20), the "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" singer posted a photo that sees her in a pool all decked out in diamonds. She tweeted the shot alongside the message “Came thru drippin'," which seems to be a nod to Cardi because the caption directly quotes lyrics from the rapper's song "Drip."
Seems innocent enough, right? Sure, but not everyone agrees—especially because of Cyrus's recent controversial comments about the hip-hop industry. Before dropping her 2017 album Malibu, the 26-year-old told Billboard that rap music was "too explicit" for her. "That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much 'Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock'—I am so not that," she explained at the time.
Considering her 2013 Bangerz album and tour was heavily inspired by black culture, fans found her comments incredibly hypocritical. Cyrus was criticized for cultural appropriation as many thought she was attaching herself to black culture in order to sell records—and people feel like she's doing the same thing with this Cardi reference.
"So glad you’re enjoying being back in an aesthetic that’s apart of a lane of music that you complained was so disrespectful and un-relatable to you so that you can chart again," one Twitter user wrote.
This tweet garnered a lot of reactions from fans who feel the same way:
