Netflix announced today that they have teamed up with Spike Lee to remake his debut feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, in the form of a 10-episode series. Spike will direct and executive produce all 10 of 30-minute episodes alongside his producer-wife Tonya Lewis Lee. Last month (Aug. 8) marked the 30th anniversary of the movie's release.

This isn't the first time we're hearing about a remake for the film, however. Two years ago, it was announced that Spike and Showtime had teamed up to develop a TV series paying homage to the original movie. But no further updates were ever given, and with the Netflix announcement, it's safe to say it didn't work out with Showtime.

In a statement about the series, Lee said the following:

“SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT Has A Very Special Place In My Heart. We Shot This Film In 12 Days (2 Six Day Weeks) Way Back In The Back Back Of The Hot Summer Of 1985 For A Mere Total of $175,000. Funds That We Begged, Borrowed and Whatnot To Get That Money. This Is The 1st Official Spike Lee Feature Film Joint And Everything That We Have Been Blessed With In This Tough Business Of Film All Have Been Due To SGHI. Now With The Passing (August 8th) Of The 30th Anniversary, It’s A Gift That Keeps On Giving. We Are Getting An Opportunity To Revisit These Memorable Characters Who Will Still Be Relevant And Avant Garde 3 Decades Later. With All That Said It Was My Wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, Producer In Her Own Right, Who Had The Vision To Take My Film From The Big Screen And Turn It Into An Episodic Series. It Had Not Occurred To Me At All. Tonya Saw It Plain As Day. I Didn’t. We Are Hyped That NETFLIX Is Onboard With This Vision As Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet And Greer Childs DO DA DAMN THANG Now, Today In Da Republic Of Brooklyn, New York.”

If you haven't seen the original movie, Nola Darling is the lead role. She's a young, self-assured Brooklynite, with three very different boyfriends. It seems like if she could put all three men in one body, that man would represent her ideal mate. But Nola obviously can't do that and doesn’t want to commit to any of her men. Even as each relationship grows, and each man wants Nola for himself, she cherishes her personal freedom.

None of the cast has been released yet, nor has it been reported that they even started casting yet. But Lee did say that he originally wrote the film with Tracy Camila Johns in mind as Nola.

And if the story remains the same, the roles of the three boyfriends, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet and Greer Childs, will be three black men.
