Nationwide, about 42 percent of deaths last year resulted in cremation, up from 26 percent in 2000.

Funeral directors say that cost plays a role in the growth of cremations.  I personally like that added bonus that it guarantees you will never come back as a brain craving zombie.

The Cremation Association of North America says the cost of cremation and a basic funeral generally ranges from $1,000 to $3,000, with the average cost of a traditional funeral being around $7,755.

Experts say that another reason behind the growth is that family members living farther apart.
