We've all heard some of our friends or family members professing that they don't shop on Amazon because it competes with brick and mortar businesses and takes jobs from local people. You may even read some such criticisms in the comments section below or on our Facebook page. But make no mistake, Amazon fulfillment centers do employ Michiganders and the retail giant is currently hiring.

Amazon is looking to hire about 3,200 people here in Michigan

Amazon is looking to hire about 3,200 employees in Southeast Michigan. According to dbusiness.com, those jobs will be based at an Amazon fulfillment facility in Detroit.

What does it pay

Most jobs pay an average wage of $17 per hour and include comprehensive health coverage. Sign-incentives of up to $1,000 are available in some locations and Amazon is paying a $100 bonus to new employees who have already been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The retailer offers full-time employees health, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) with 50 percent company match, paid parental leave, and access to some continuing education, paying 95% of tuition costs for qualifying courses.

Big picture

The hiring initiative in Michigan is part of a nationwide push to bring about 75,000 people into the Amazon family in the US and Canada, according to Alicia Boler Davis, vice president of global customer fulfillment.

“We look forward to hiring 75,000 associates across our fulfillment and transportation network,” Boler Davis said. “Working at Amazon also comes with an unwavering commitment to safety, especially as we continue to navigate a global pandemic.”
