Have you gotten any calls about recent purchases on your Amazon account? It's happened to my family a few times now, on both our cellphones and on our landline.

(Go ahead, make fun of me because I still have a landline phone. I'll wait ...)

One of the calls went something like this:

"We're calling about a recent transaction on your account. A purchase of $729 may have been made without your permission. Please press one to speak with a representative."

The automated calls use men's and women's voices and are quite believable. It's safe to say that most of us use Amazon from time to time, so it's within the realm of possibility that you may have concerns about recent purchases.

That's what the scammers are hoping for.

Turns out, these scam calls are targeting a lot of people on a widespread basis. The Federal Trade Commission tells WXYZ-TV in Detroit that if you're the victim of one of these calls, you'll be asked to press one (or place a return call) in order to speak with an Amazon representative. That representative (or "specialist") will then ask you to verify your credit card number.

Obviously, giving out your credit card number (or any other personal information) is something you should not do.

Your best bet is to hang up. Check the Amazon app on your phone or check your account online. Any recent purchases will show up under 'your orders.'
