Despite promises from tech companies to hire more people from underrepresented backgrounds in an effort to diversify their workforces, the truth of the matter is that the industry still has a significant amount of progress to make when it comes to inclusivity.

For example, according to a CNBC analysis of the annual diversity reports from five of the top tech companies, many of them "have seen low single-digit increases in their percentage of Black employees" in spite of pledges to support equality and create opportunities for minorities within their companies.

Aspiring coders and engineers from underrepresented backgrounds may find these statistics to be discouraging and make them feel like they don't have as good of a chance as others to make it in the industry.

Luckily, Dream Corps TECH is a national program cultivating future leaders and entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds with the goal of creating a pipeline of diversity that will shift the culture of the tech sector.

Here are the 4 key ways in which Dream Corps TECH is looking to achieve their mission of moving the tech industry towards a more inclusive future:

TRAIN – Provide technical and soft skills training to untapped talent from underrepresented communities to secure guaranteed full time employment in tech related fields

ENGAGE – Through various modalities of media and technology, provide resources and tools for connection, education and professional maturation

CHANGE-  Construct and influence policy at the state and federal level to undergird the equitable work we are doing for inclusivity in the tech industry

HUMANIZE – Inject soul into the conversation on tech diversity and its critical mass in this moment in history

There's also the Dream Corps TECH Scholarship Fund, which is made possible with support from the PwC Charitable Foundation and deploys support to underrepresented individuals seeking to up-skill and advance their tech career options.

The scholarships support specialized tech courses, career technical education, and career advancement opportunities. Dream Corps TECH hopes to have awarded 400 of their scholarships by 2022. Interested in learning more about the Scholarship Fund? Click the button below to learn more.
