Excessive Heat Warning Issued For Genesee County
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Genesee County and surrounding areas.
The warning started yesterday and will run through Sunday morning as temperatures continue to rise. The highs today, Friday and Saturday are expected to get into the mid to upper 90's. The heat index will make temperatures feel like they are well into triple digits.
There are many cooling centers located all throughout Genesee County during the heat warning. You can get the complete list of cooling centers here.
Some cities have taken it upon themselves to set up water stations with the fire department. Swartz Creek is planning on having hydrants opened and trucks spraying kids as well according to their Facebook post below.
The main thing to remember is that it does not take long to overheat in these extreme conditions. Here are a few things you can do to help keep yourself safe.
- Limit exposure to direct heat
- Drink plenty of water (limit soda, alcohol, and caffeine)
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities like mowing etc.
- Never leave any one or animal in a closed car
It only takes a few minutes for heat exposure to start to impact you, so make sure you are aware of cooling areas near you.
