It’s About Time – Burton Eyesore Set for Demolition and Clean-Up

Back in late September, we told you that Scotti's Coney Island, a family-owned restaurant in Burton, had caught fire late one night/early morning and burned to the ground.

Technically, it didn’t burn completely to the ground, as for the past five months plus, pieces of burned steel, chunks of concrete, and other debris have sat in a charred pile alongside Belsay Road.

If you've been driving by the ruins of Scotti’s Coney Island every single day, I'm sure it feels like it's been a lot longer than five months. I mean, it really is a major eyesore.

According to ABC 12, Burton Fire officials deemed the fire an act of arson. Unfortunately, no one has been arrested in connection with the fire, and the investigation is ongoing.

Now that investigators have all the evidence and everything that they need from the scene, it's time to finally clean up the blight.

Burton's Mayor Duane Haskins told ABC 12 that Consumers Energy was coming out to cut and cap utility lines. This means they'll be disconnecting and sealing off gas, water, or electrical lines at the site before demolition can proceed. Once that happens, you'll see things start to get cleaned up there on the corner of Belsay and Lapeer Roads.

It's unclear at the moment what, if anything, will replace the former building, which sat on the corner for roughly 65 years.

With an excavator now on site, clean-up should get underway soon.
