Earlier this week, police in Marquette defused what could have been a deadly situation.

City Hall was evacuated Monday afternoon, and a perimeter was put in place after a man entered the building with a gun.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. on Monday, as per a press release from the Marquette Police Department, an individual entered the lower level of Marquette City Hall and asked to speak with a police officer. During the wait, he encountered a civilian with a handgun who exited the building safely. Moments later, the individual returned to the front window of the police department and confronted officers with the handgun.

It's unclear as to exactly what happened but according to The Mining Journal, the man talked with officers for roughly 90 minutes. At some point, officers managed to disarm him. While no one was seriously hurt, the man was transported to UPHS-Marquette for evaluation.

Police surrounding City Hall is something that doesn't happen very often in Marquette.

Marquette is a relatively safe city when it comes to crime. The violent crime rate is 10.5 per 1000 individuals, which is significantly lower than the US average of 22.7 per 1000 people.
