For the most part, Michigan hunters follow the rules…these guys? Not so much.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, five Michigan hunters just got sentenced in Ohio after a pretty serious deer poaching investigation that went on for nearly two years. It all started with a tip back in 2023, and from there, wildlife officers basically went undercover and built a case piece by piece.

And yeah…they had receipts. Photos, videos, and even catching some of it happening in real time.

What Is Jacklighting and Why Is It Illegal in Michigan and Ohio?

The big one here is something called jacklighting.

That’s when someone uses a spotlight at night to freeze a deer in place, so it’s easier to shoot. It’s illegal, and honestly, most hunters will tell you it’s about as low as it gets.

On top of that, there were issues with not tagging deer, hunting without proper licenses, and even shooting from vehicles. Yeah, they were out of control.

These guys were hit with thousands in fines and restitution, revoked hunting licenses for three years, probation, and even jail time in some cases. One guy ended up on house arrest for nearly a year with an ankle monitor. This is a really big deal.

At the end of the day, this wasn’t some small mistake. This was a full-blown operation that got caught.
