This is one of those stories that makes you stop and go, "Wait...what?"

When you think about working inside a prison, you'd assume the one thing corrections officers could always count on is each other. I mean, that just seems like a no-brainer. Yet, here we are.

Why Was the Michigan Corrections Officer Charged?

According to MLive, the incident happened at Baraga Correctional Facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Investigators say a former corrections officer intentionally opened an inmate's cell door, knowing the prisoner would attack another officer.

Police say the other officer was busy with a separate task when the cell door was opened. The inmate allegedly came charging out, put the officer in a headlock, and started throwing punches to the head and upper body before other staff members stepped in and got things under control. Honestly, it sounds like something straight out of a movie.

Thankfully, it doesn't sound like the officer's injuries were life-threatening.

Why Is the Former Michigan Corrections Officer Facing Charges?

Investigators don't believe the former corrections officer accidentally opened that cell door. They say she knew exactly what was about to happen, which is why she's now facing a felony charge of Assault of a Prison Employee.

The inmate involved is also facing additional felony charges, including Assault of a Prison Employee and Possession of a Weapon by a Prisoner.

If investigators have this right, I honestly don't know how you'd ever trust the person working next to you again. Being a corrections officer is already one of the toughest jobs out there. The last thing you'd expect is to have to question whether one of your own really has your back.
