While it doesn't happen very often, some schools throughout the state will close due to freezing temps. Technically it's not the temperature that causes schools to close, it's the brutal wind chill factor.

How Cold is Too Cold for Kids to Go to School in Michigan?

There is no law currently in place that dictates whether or not kids can go to school if the temperature in the state drops to a specific number. However, The rule that most school districts follow is that if the wind chill is -20 to -25 or lower, schools will close.

According to WDIV, the -25 degree benchmark is likely because of frostbite concerns. Frostbite can occur starting around -20 degrees.

How Cold is Too Cold for Kids to Play Outside?

Again, no law dictates this but according to A Healthier Michigan, there is a general rule that you should follow.

As a general rule, you should use the wind chill as the best judge if it’s too cold to play outside. In general, when the wind chill is 32 degrees and above, it’s safe to be outside. In temperatures 13 degrees to 31 degrees, indoor breaks should happen every 20-30 minutes. For wind-chills of 13 degrees and below, you should move activities indoors and outside of the cold as frostbite can set in very quickly.

The best thing you can do is use common sense and if your kids are going to be outside during extremely cold days, make sure they're bundled up well.
