Former Flint Police Officer Charged With Attempted Murder in Genesee Township Shooting

A case that started as an officer-involved shooting has taken a pretty dramatic turn. A former Flint police officer is now the one facing serious felony charges.

Thirty-nine-year-old Corey Graves has been charged with assault with intent to murder, felony firearm, and misconduct in office after a shooting in Genesee Township back in January.

What Investigators Say Happened During the Genesee Township Encounter

According to the Michigan State Police investigation, Graves told his patrol partner he had received a text about the location of a man he had been looking for, saying the man had outstanding warrants and was trying to break into an apartment.

Investigators say they found the man asleep inside a vehicle according to ABC 12. When he woke up and tried to drive away, Graves allegedly fired through the driver's side window. The driver was struck in the shoulder by bullet fragments but managed to get away before he was later arrested in Florida several days afterward.

MSP Discovers That a Personal Dispute Allegedly Played a Role in Shooting

The investigation uncovered another twist. Prosecutors say Graves and the man had an ongoing personal dispute, and Graves had reportedly arrested him more than six times in previous encounters. They also allege neither Graves nor his partner notified police dispatch they were searching for the man until after the shooting.

Graves has since been charged with attempted murder-related offenses, misconduct in office, and felony firearm charges. He's currently being held in the Lapeer County Jail following his arraignment. It's still unclear exactly when Graves left the Flint Police Department or whether he resigned or was terminated.
