Travel North to Find HGTV’s Pick for Most Charming Town in Michigan
If you are lucky enough to call Michigan home you are aware that the state is filled with charming, quaint, and unique small towns. It's part of what makes our state the perfect place to work and play as well as a hot spot for four seasons of travel-destination fun.
HGTV, the popular network for everything home, lifestyle, and travel set out to find the "best of the best' when it comes to charming and set its sights on towns across the country. The gang at HGTV put together a list of the "50 of the Most Charming Towns in America" exploring those hidden gems in each state.
For HGTV's choice for Michigan, you'll have to travel pretty far north, but it is well worth the drive. Located in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, Houghton was the choice for the most charming town in the Mitten State. The largest city in Houghton County Michigan, with a population of just under 8,000 people caught the team's eye as that perfect small town with a little something extra.
"Picturesque Houghton, in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, is surrounded by inland lakes and streams. Its 233 miles of snowmobile trails and world-class biking opportunities attract adventurers, and history buffs come to explore its colorful mining past. The sunsets on Lake Superior are stunning, and in the winter, McLain State Park, shown here, invites visitors to hike, enjoy its spectacular ice formations, cross-country ski and snowshoe", HGTV said about their Michigan selection.
Although "way up there", Houghton is a popular destination. Houghton is home to Michigan Technological University. Houghton also hosts a festival known as "Bridgefest", to commemorate the building of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge each year. That festival is often held in conjunction with "Seafoodfest".
Every fall, you will find the Parade of Nations taking place in downtown Houghton to commemorate the ethnic diversity of Michigan Technological University. It's easy to see why this northern Michigan town was chosen, right?
