Last September, during one of the most terrifying days Grand Blanc Township has seen in years, a Michigan conservation officer just happened to be nearby when chaos broke out at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of how quickly he reacted, authorities say even more lives may have been lost if he had not stepped in.

Michigan DNR Officer Honored for Heroic Actions During Grand Blanc Church Attack

This week according to MLive, Conservation Officer Luke Robare was awarded Michigan’s Medal of Valor along with a Lifesaving Award for his actions during that church attack on September 28, 2025. According to officials, the attacker drove a vehicle into the church, opened fire on people inside, and then set the building on fire. It was an absolute nightmare scenario.

Robare was reportedly conducting fishing patrol between lakes when the active shooter call came across dispatch. Within minutes, he arrived at the church and moved directly toward the threat. Authorities say his fast response helped stop the attack before more people could be killed.

Governor Whitmer Praises Officer’s Courage

Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised Robare this week, saying his willingness to risk his own life reflects the kind of courage law enforcement officers across Michigan show every day. Grand Blanc Township Police Officer Jason Carpentier was also recognized earlier this year for his role in responding to the attack.

I think what stands out most about this story is that a lot of people probably still picture conservation officers as people checking fishing licenses or patrolling state land. But they are fully trained law enforcement officers with statewide authority, and in this case, one of them happened to be exactly where he needed to be during a tragedy.

And honestly, it is hard not to think about how different this story could have ended without that quick response.
