Michiganders Left Out of Movie Events & Celebrations
But when it comes to blockbusters made in Hollywood or New York, it’s tough for Michiganders to be part of the celebrations, anniversaries and other events that are closely tied to some of our most beloved movies. However, one Hollywood hit is coming to The Great Lakes State!
Back to the Future in Michigan? The Broadway Musical is Coming
One film that captivated the world — and later became one of the most beloved trilogies of all time — is the 1985 box-office hit Back to the Future. But because it was based in and filmed in California, many of the events that celebrate the film happen more than 2,000 miles away from Michigan. Even when the musical first opened in Manchester, England, in 2020, seeing that show for a Michigander meant paying not just for admission but also for international plane tickets and other travel costs.

When the musical opened on Broadway in New York City (August 2023), it was still out of reach for many Michiganders. Fortunately, as the 40th anniversary of what many call a 'perfect' film is being celebrated this year, Back to the Future: The Musical is coming to Michigan.
