‘Let’s Make Miracles’ Radiothon 2020: The Neumann Family
Can you imagine, not just having ONE child with cancer, but TWO?
Emily Neumann is the proud mom of Rowan, who is 10-years-old, and Winnie, who is 3-years-old. Rowan had had some routine labwork; his doctor called Emily and told her to take him to the hospital. He'd had some bruising and his skin was pale; his parents took him to Hurley Children's Hospital.
The team informed them that Rowan had cancer and required a bone marrow transplant.
"As scary as it was, it was very easy to put our trust in these people," said Emily. "It was not difficult to trust the professionals at hurley. The difficult stuff was day-to-day, but we had a support system at Hurley."
And then, the unthinkable happened - Winnie was also diagnosed with cancer.
"The doctor has had to tell us four times that each of our kids has cancer. Each time was more difficult," said Emily.
Fortunately, Rowan has been cancer-free since November of 2017 and Winnie is now also in remission. And both of them are now able to just live their lives as kids should - Rowan loves the Beatles and science, and Winnie likes the kids at her daycare and Doc McStuffins.
"We were a family that only visited hurley when our children were born and never imagined a need for a hospital outside of the birth of a child. They're amazing."
