Nicki Minaj Details Past Abusive Relationship: “I Really Used to Think Love Had to Hurt”
Fans have seen Nicki Minaj show her tough exterior in the music and interviews, but that’s not to say that she hasn’t gone through some hardships.
On Sunday (Sept. 1), Nicki opened up to the Barbs on her Twitter page and revealed her own experience in a past abusive relationship. In a series of tweets, the rap superstar urged her followers to refrain from passing judgment on other women in toxic relationships.
"When u see a woman in a toxic relationship, rather than laugh & say mean things, try to offer sound advice from your heart & root for her to learn her worth," she tweeted. "We’ve all been there. I saw my parents fight & argue non stop & never divorce, so I thought this was normal behavior."
Nicki, who completed her European tour earlier this year, then went on to talk about being in an abusive relationship.
"I rlly used to think love had to hurt. So I could never look down on anyone else. We are merely human," she wrote in part. "It’s not easy to leave. Especially in the world of IG where all ppl want to do is post relationship goal pics for clout & attention. A man should make you feel safe, not afraid."
She also expressed how her past relationship turned violent. "I remember being so afraid to speak cuz I never knew when that person would be in a particular mood and I could maybe say one wrong thing that would get me hit," she admitted. "So the diff you see in me now is that feeling when a woman feels lifted up, safe, appreciated & unconditionally loved."
The "Megatron" rapper hopes for people to judge less and uplift more. "But I first had to learn how to love MYSELF," she continued. "If you wouldn’t let a man treat your mother, your sister or best friend like that b/c you LOVE them, then you wouldn’t let a man treat YOU like that b/c you love YOU. This isn’t about judging. We judge too much. Lift them up."
Nicki had previously talked about her dark moments in her past in a trailer for her upcoming Queen documentary last year. In a teaser posted on her Instagram page last October, she recalled her father's violent behavior toward her mother and how that affected her. "I remember when my mother would let my father be violent with her. And she always brings up this story, as a little girl I would stand in front of my mother and go like this," she said showing her arms in defense. "And then all of a sudden, that was my life."
Currently, the Queen creator is in a loving relationship with her fiancé Kenneth "Zoo" Perry. The couple are expected to get married very soon.
