Vacant North End Building to be Turned Into Co-op Grocery Store

Flint's north side will soon see the revitalization of a vacant building.

A new project in the City of Flint will see a vacant building on the north end of Flint turned into a co-op grocery store. The new North Flint Food Market will be placed in the long-vacant building at Pierson and Clio Roads. This new market is expected to create 27 new and permanent, full-time jobs.

This project was just recently announced by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The new full-service grocery store in North Flint will help residents with the access to healthy, fresh food they deserve, and offer a community space that will create jobs...This community partnership and investment are delivering on this longstanding need in the community and helping to build the path for economic growth and recovery in Flint. The store will feed families, create jobs, and help us continue our economic jumpstart...said Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

This new grocery store will bring access to fresh foods to local residents on Flint's north side. With 836 member-owners currently on board, this food co-op will revitalize the vacant site and give ownership opportunities to members of the community. On top of the public-private partnership, several government and nonprofit organizations have given their support to the project.

Having access to fresh, affordable food is vital for the well-being of all Michiganders, especially for those living in 'food deserts' who have the additional barriers of excessive costs and lack of transportation to get to grocery stores outside of their neighborhoods...We're pleased to work with the many partners who have brought this much-needed market to the North Flint community, and we look forward to seeing additional economic activity and investment in the area in the coming months and years...said MEDC Senior Vice President of Community Development Michele Wildman.
