Drake Takes Shots at Pitbull + David Guetta

Despite the fact that follow Young Money recording artist Nicki Minaj has collaborated with French DJ/producer David Guetta, don’t expect Drake to follow suit. The Toronto-bred rapper is not a fan of fist-pumping dance music.

“For me, the David Guetta stuff just doesn’t work,” Drake tells NME magazine (via The Boombox). “I don’t really wanna go there. There’s other artists, that’s their sound.”

It seems Drake feels that artists— especially those who aren’t necessarily known for traditionally making dance music— are watering down their sound by trying to appease that audience. That’s not necessarily something he can cosign.

“They feel in order to thrive internationally that they gotta do straightforward, four on the flour, David Guetta, Pitbull music,” he says. ”For me, I’d rather go to somebody like [producer] Jamie xx and tell him, ‘Look, I really wanna turn the club upside down, but I wanna do it with integrity, with soul.”’

Pitbull shot back at his critics in the April issue of GQ.

“It’s the people who think they’re talented, that their sh*t don’t stink, who get left behind,” he said. “People say I switched? Maybe I outgrew you. I look at it as an evolution, and setting the path. I’m showing you where to go.”

Guetta thinks the marriage of rap and dance is a return to form for hip-hop.

“As much as people love urban music, maybe they’re a little tired of the negative energy,” he told XXL last year. “Hip-hop was like this at the beginning. I remember. Hip-hop records were like party records. People need to escape. Leave your problems outside for a moment and just have a good time. It doesn’t mean it’s stupid or pointless.”
