The CANUSA games have been one of the great events in Flint for the last 58 years, but all that will change with this year as Flint Schools have been forced to cut the funding for them.

Trying to put the impact that CANUSA has had on so many young people into words is impossible.  Nearly every prominent athlete to come out of Genesee County has taken part of the games in one way or another.

More important than the stars that have participated, are the friendships and lessons that were gained through the games.

I was lucky enough to cover the games for two years with FOX66.  I was able to see the effects that the genuine hospitality had on the young athletes.  Most entered the games nervous about living with someone from a different country for a couple of days, but all emerged with a new perspective.

Confidence, sportsmanship, friendship, and fun are just a few of the key staples that the CANUSA games worked at providing its athletes.

The ending of the CANUSA games is beyond sad, and I can only hope that they find a way to save this great tradition.
