Downtown Lapeer is closed this morning after gas entered the sewer lines running below downtown.

According to WNEM, manhole covers were dislodged because of the explosions under the street.

Lapeer Police closed the entire downtown area after the first sign of problems around 4:30am this morning.

The roads are blocked by barricades right now at Saginaw and Oregon, Saginaw and Horton, Nepessing and Mason, and Saginaw and Nepessing. There are many other road closures leading into the downtown area.

Right now there is no clear cause of the gas leak, but Lapeer Police are making sure everyone stays out of the downtown area until it is fixed.
