A Flint gym has cut ties with CrossFit and changed the name of the facility after a series of Tweets made by CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman sparked controversy.

Flint Crossfit on University Ave. in Flint is now known as Sal's Gym. Owners Jacob and Ashleigh Saldana tell Mid-Michigan Now that the new name indicates that "It's a place of unity."

The owners abruptly cut ties with Cross-Fit after CEO Greg Glassman's series of insensitive tweets in response to George Floyd's death.

Glassman's tweets were in response to a post by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, which read "Racism and discrimination are critical public health issues that demand an urgent response," followed by the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

Glassman's first response was, "It's Floyd-19."

He followed up with the following: "Your failed model quarantined us and now you're going to model a solution to racism?"

Respondents called the tweets, divisive, unacceptable, and tone-deaf.

Backlash has been swift. Reebok quickly ended its affiliation with Crossfit. Other gyms in the US have vowed to distance themselves from the CrossFit brand after consumers took to social media saying they would no longer patronize gyms affiliated with CrossFit.

The Saldanas say their values no longer align with Glassman's.

“It may have seemed abrupt, but it was important for us to do and we needed to take action rather than just sit and wait for something to blow over, because it is very inappropriate.”

CrossFit is still affiliated with other area gyms, including facilities in Grand Blanc, Burton, Fenton, Flushing, Flint, Chesaning, Owosso, and Holly.
