We've seen some really tough winters over the past five years here in the Flint area, but based on the numbers this year hasn't been so bad.

Last winter kind of sucked. We broke the overall snowfall record for the area, but it still didn't give me PWSD (Post Winter Stress Disorder) like the winter of 2013-2014. Sure, more snow fell in 2017-2018, but we didn't have a huge snowstorm followed by two weeks of below zero temps like we saw during that awful, soul-crushing winter five years ago.

I'm kind of jumping around, but the point I'm trying to make is that we Michiganders were due for a break, and it looks like we might be in that break right now. It's hard to think about because winter always sucks no matter what, but this one hasn't been too bad. Let's look at the numbers.

Even though we're a little bit shy of the month's end, by January 30, 2018, the Flint area had already seen a total of 43.9" of snow for that winter. This winter, we're only at 15.8" according to National Weather Service records, which is roughly 3x less

The fact that it's been so light has me worried about what's to come. Is Mother Nature about to dump three months of revenge snow on us? Not according to the long-range forecast. Both the National Weather Service temperature and precipitation 3-month outlooks say we're looking at an average to below average rest of the winter in severity.

That report seems to jive with predictions from the Old Farmer's Almanac, which seems to be accurate thus far.

According to the Weather Channel's 10-day forecast, we may see 3-5 inches mid-way through next week, but even that is 50/50. Michigan weather is the furthest thing from predictable, but I'll take whatever any positive outlook I can get.
