The largest school district in Genesee County is hitting the pause button on in-person learning, and making the switch back to online classes, at least for now.

In a letter to parents, the Grand Blanc Community School District made the announcement that students would be switching back to remote learning across their district. In the letter from Superintendent Dr. Trevor Alward, the decision was made due to the increased number of COVID-19 cases and the spreading Omicron variant.

Students in both the elementary and middle schools in the districts will be switching to remote learning effective Tuesday, January 18, 2022. There is already no school on Monday, January 17 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Those high school students in the district will make the switch effective Thursday, January 13, 2022.  All students will return to the classroom on January 25, 2022.

Upcoming final exams for the high school will be done as scheduled unless noted by specific teachers. Exams will be January 19-21 and be remote half days from 7:20 am -10:43 am. In the letter, Superintendent Alward also indicates a mask requirement will be extended for K-12 through February 18, 2022, and be reevaluated at that time.

The decision, per Alward, was not an easy one to make saying,

"Shifting to remote is not easy on anyone, and we did not make the decision lightly. We will continue to evaluate the situation and the need for further contingencies as we navigate these winter months."
