There's been a dramatic increase of gastrointestinal illnesses in Genesee County lately, so the Health Department has issued a county-wide warning.

To put it bluntly, a lot of kids in our area are getting diarrhea, and there isn't an obvious reason why.

Gastrointestinal illness can also include the following symptoms according to the GCHD.

The most common symptoms include loose stools, potential fever, gas, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

The recommendation from the GCHD is that anyone experiencing these symptoms should wait at least two days until the symptoms have stopped to return to work or school.

The best way to avoid getting sick is to wash your hands as often as possible, and encourage those around you to do the same.

The county-wide health warning runs through the end of May.
