As Michigan's extremely mild winter comes to an end in the coming weeks and things start warming up, we should start preparing ourselves for the return of the most dangerous creatures on earth. While that may sound a little over the top and dramatic, it's 100% accurate.

The most dangerous creature on earth is the mosquito. I'm sure that came across as very anticlimatic but it's true. According to the CDC, the mosquito has killed more humans than any other living creature in history.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the death of millions of people. There are some reports that claim mosquitoes may have claimed over 50 billion lives throughout history. Keep in mind that it's not mosquitoes themselves per se, but rather the diseases they carry including malaria, dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, Zika, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis.

The most common mosquito-borne disease that we endure in the U.S. is the West Nile virus.

For most people living in Michigan, mosquitoes are nothing more than annoying little bugs that we're forced to deal with for six months out of the year, depending on the weather. Once we hit over 50 degrees and stay there consistently, the mosquito invasion begins.

How to Battle the Mosquito Invasion

While many are familiar with common practices like using repellent and wearing proper clothing to avoid mosquitoes, one crucial step that often gets overlooked is the elimination of standing water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in still water. So, remember to regularly empty or get rid of things that collect water, such as flowerpots, gutters, and bird baths. This simple step prevents more mosquitoes from hatching.

You can also do what I do: hire someone to spray your yard regularly throughout the summer. Trust me, it's worth every penny.
