This summer in Michigan has pretty much been void of just about every festival and event across the state. Although some have tried to scale down or adjust to adhere to state guidelines, COVID-19 has mostly won out.

The Mackinac Island Fudge Festival is going to happen this year, but with some changes in place.  The annual event brings together fudge lovers, known as "budgies", from across the globe to Mackinac Island. This years event will be taking place August 28-30.

According to the Mackinaw Island Facebook page, the festival this year will be mostly virtual with some traditional events. This years festival will feature programming throughout the weekend. There will be virtual fudge making demonstrations by the island’s top fudge makers. May's Candy Shop will be doing big reveal of the new fudge flavor as well.

Fudge shops like Joann’s, Kilwin’s, May’s, Murdick’s, Ryba’s, and Sanders will be offering  fudge making demonstrations at their locations with social distancing guidelines in place.  Fort Mackinaw will be offering a free outdoor showing of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on Saturday night for the whole family to enjoy. Still happening this year will be the annual cornhole tournament on the lawn at Mission Point Resort, Funday Sunday and family games at Windermere Point.

Organizers realize the tough situation event like this have been facing this year, and wanted to be able to offer some type of normal in a safe setting. “Our members have worked overtime to make the 2020 Fudge Festival a fun, safe reality for fans on the island and beyond,” Mackinac Island Tourism Executive Director Tim Hygh said. “From implementing best practice safety measures and proliferating PPE to reformatting select events to offer a strong virtual experience, we are proud to bring this event to life again in spite of the uncertainty everyone has faced this year.”
