MHSAA Suspends All Winter Sports Due To Coronavirus

The MHSAA has made the decision to suspend all winter sports due to the conditions surrounding the Coronavirus.

The announcement came on Twitter Thursday afternoon.

The Winter tournaments are paused for now including boys and girls basketball, hockey, and gymnastics.

Mark Uyl is the MHSAA Executive Director, and he issued a statement about the cancellation. You can also watch a full video of his statement here.

Based on the events of the last 48 hours and with things changing by the minute, we believe we have no choice but to suspend our winter tournaments immediately. This is a suspension until we have a better handle on the situation. The health and welfare of everyone involved is our number one priority

I don't think anyone is surprised by the announcement at this point. It feels like we are all just waiting for the next shoe to drop. The MHSAA joins the NBA, NHL, MLB, and many other sports organizations in postponing.

Most of the people involved are hoping that this is just a postponement and not an outright cancellation. The problem is that we are still so new into this pandemic, that nobody knows exactly when or how things will calm down.
