Michigan has nine different international border crossings with Canada.

For those living in Michigan, we are well aware of how easy it is to "travel internationally." However, most people only think of a couple of bridges and the tunnel in Detroit, but Michigan actually has nine international border crossings into Ontario, Canada.

Growing up, most people learn ways to skirt the rules to do "bad" things. Many Michiganders will probably admit to using the Canada loophole when they were younger. Back in the day, you only had to be 18 to gamble or drink in Canada while the legal age is 21 in Michigan. So, to get around that problem and have some adult fun, many of us took the Ambassador Bridge or the tunnel to Windsor to get away with things. Even though the age is now 19 in Canada and the border was considerably easier to cross back then, I'm sure some kids still do this.

While the Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel in Detroit are probably the most known, there are still seven more international crossings connecting Michigan to Canada. In 2024, there will even be another with the completion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The other seven crossings include railway tunnels, ferries, and other bridges in the state. These other crossings are located in Port Huron, Marine City, Sault Ste. Marie, and Algonac. Obviously, some of these are not for the public, mainly the railways. Check out the list below to see all the ways people and goods travel internationally between the two countries.
